TUTORIAL: Come sistemare una trovatella del 1980

Molti di voi mi hanno richiesto dei tutorial per mettere a posto le Barbie usate, quelle che troviamo al mercatino o che ci arrivano in qualche lotto e sono un po’ malandate e necessitano di amorevoli cure.

Many of you have asked me about creating tutorial to repair second-hand Barbie, the ones we find at thrift shop or flea market or the ones that arrive in bundles and are a little bit bitten-up and need lovely care.

Ovviamente ognuno di noi ha le proprie tecniche, non sono certo un guru del restauro, però magari chi è alle prime armi  o non si è mai cimentato potrà trovare qualche passaggio utile o fonte di ispirazione per iniziare a sistemare quelle trovatelle da troppo tempo abbandonate in cantina.

Obviously, each of us has their own techniques, I am not a restoration guru, but who is a beginner or has never tried will probably find some steps useful or will be inspired to start fixing those orphan dolls, abandoned for too much time in the basement.

Un mio carissimo amico mi ha generosamente regalato un po’ delle sue Barbie che teneva in garage, delle bellezze mozzafiato un po’ impolverate e molto giocate che però celavano ancora una strabiliante bellezza nascosta che andava riportata alla luce!

One of my dear friends has donated me some of his Barbie dolls that he kept in his garage, some are used but they still hid an astonishing beauty that had to be unerthed again.

Oggi quindi sistemiamo insieme una delle mie bambole preferite: Golden Dream Barbie 1980.

So today we are going to fix one of my favourite dolls together: 1980 Golden Dream Barbie.

Vediamo quindi quali “problemi” presenta la nostra paziente di oggi:

·         Gambe lente e fianchi allargati

·         Rossetto imperfetto dal lato sinistro (difetto di fabbrica)

·         Capelli secchi e stopposi

·         Necessita di una pulitura

·         Testa lenta

Let's see what issues our patient has:

·         loose leg joints and hips

·         smudged lipstick on the left (manufactory defect)

·         dry and stringy hair

·         needing some cleaning

·         wobble head

 Avete delle bimbe che presentano gli stessi problemi?

Mmmmmmh….allora direi di metterci subito a lavoro!

mmmmmmh... so let's get started!

Il primo passaggio è quello del lavaggio: acqua tiepida, panno in microfibra e sgrassatore per lavare bene la bambola e renderla pulita.

The first step is cleaning: warm water, microfiber cloth and degreaser to clean the doll well.

Successivamente inizia una parte che può sembrare un po’ macabra e crudele ma è a fin di bene, giuro! Teniamo la testa della bambola sotto l’acqua calda e stacchiamola delicatamente (le bambole di questa epoca non hanno i ganci al perno che tiene la testa e le teste sono molto morbide quindi non dovrebbe essere difficile).

The next step can seem a bit macabre and cruel but it's for good - I swear!
Put the doll head under a stream of hot water and remove the doll head gently (dolls from this period do not have hooks on the peg holding the head and the heads are very soft so it shouldn't be difficult).

Il secondo passaggio un po’ più complicato e cruento è quello di staccare le gambe (anche questo passaggio su questo tipo di bambole non è troppo complicato, ma non provate a farlo con le bambole antecedenti a questo periodo come le Mod o le più tarde anni 90 o le romperete). Teniamo quindi le gambe sotto il getto dell’acqua calda per ammorbidire il vinile e poi con un colpo deciso le stacchiamo. A questo punto la nostra povera bambola è ridotta così:

The second step - this is a bit more complicated and gory - is remove the legs (also this one shouldn't be too difficult on this type of doll, but do not try with dolls from previous periods, like the Mold, and with 90s doll, or you are going to break them). Put the legs  under a stream of hot water to soften the vinyl e then pull them decisively. At this point our poor doll looks like this:

Laviamo quindi i capelli con un paio di passate di shampoo (molti usano altri prodotti, ma io sono della vecchia scuola), poi mettiamo il balsamo e pettiniamo delicatamente per togliere i nodi. I capelli sono molto secchi quindi dobbiamo farlo dolcemente e lentamente per non spezzarli. Una volta pettinata mettiamo la testa in un bicchiere con dell’ammorbidente ancora con il balsamo sui capelli e lasciamo a mollo per qualche ora.

Wash her hair using some shampoo twice (many use other products, but I am old school), then put the conditioner and comb delicately to eliminate any tangles. Her hair is really dry so we have to comb gently and slowly in order not to break it. Once her hair is combed, put the head in a glass with fabric softner and some conditioner still on the hair and leave it for some hours.

Passiamo al corpo! Mettiamo a bollire un pentolino con dell’acqua e quando è bollente spegnamo i fuochi e mettiamo a mollo le gambe per 30/40 secondi all’altezza del perno. Questo farà stringere i fori e aiuterà il vinile a riprendere la forma che aveva in origine. Faccio questo per tentare di rendere meno lente le gambe. Una volta ultimato il passaggio monto nuovamente le gambe sul corpo, non ho risolto completamente il problema ma la situazione è decisamente migliorata.

Let's move on to the body! Put to boil some water, turn it off when it is boiling, and put the parts of the legs where the  joints are in water for 30/40 seconds.  This is going to shrink the holes and help  the vinyl go back to its original shape. I am doing this to make the legs less loose. Once this step is done, I put the legs back onto the body, this did not resolve the whole problem but it is surely better now.

Dopo qualche ora torno alla testa: sciacquo per bene i capelli e poi immergo il buco della testa nell’acqua bollente per far stringere il foro un po’ dilatato e applico un po’ di filo di cotone intorno al perno del collo per renderlo più stabile.

After some hours, I go back to work on the head: I rinse the hair and put the hole of the head into hot water to make it shrink and I add some thread to the neck peg to make it stabler.

Con la trielina e uno stuzzicadenti imbevuto nella soluzione rimuovo delicatamente l’eccesso di colore dal lato della bocca (difetto di fabbrica per me che sono perfezionista) e poi rimonto la testa sul corpo.

With a toothpick  soaked in trilene, I remove gently the excess of colour from the side of the mouth (a manufacturing defect for a perfectionist like me) and then I put the head back onto the body.

Con una spazzola, attenzione, e pazienza, sistemo la riga dei capelli incrociando le piccole ciocche che la compongono.

I part the hair carefully with a comb by alternating the small locks.

A questo punto verso l’acqua bollente sui capelli e pettino per far stringere i fori dei capelli e renderli più forti, per ammorbidire la fibra dei capelli, e per fissare la messa in piega.

At this point I pour some hot water on the hair and comb to shrink hair plugs and make them stronger, to soften the hair fiber, and to set the hairdo.

Successivamente con un batuffolo di ovatta e latte detergente pulisco a fondo gambe e viso della bambola per rimuovere dal vinile la polvere rimasta ed eventuali aloni di polvere.

Then I clean the doll legs and face using a cotton ball and cleaning milk to remove any dust and dust spots from the vinyl.

Applico sui capelli olio ai semi di lino per contrastare la secchezza e inizio ad acconciare la Barbie. La Golden Dream ha dei fili di rame nei capelli per rendere più semplice creare delle acconciature, così uso delle mollettine come bigodini e cerco di darle un look curly. Aspetto quindi che i capelli siano asciutti.

I put some linseed oil onto the hair to eliminate dryness and I start to coif the doll.
Golden Dream Barbie has some thin copper wire to make hairdos easier, so I use some hair clips as curlers and I try to give her a curly hairdo. I wait for the hair to dry off.

A questo punto la bambola va solo acconciata, vestita come più ci piace, e goduta! Io le ho anche realizzato dei gioielli a mano.

At this point the dolls needs only a hairdo, an outfit you liked and to be enjoyed!
I also handcrafted some jewels for her.
